Project MAP is the Map Analysis Project so use it to help you enjoy travel with the information on a map can share with you. Here are some related travel tips to help you have a safe and enjoyable trip.
- Good planning for a trip makes a huge difference to increase your chances of arriving safely and on time. Here are some tips to use when you Take Action! in preparation for a road trip.
- Use an online mapping service to help you plan your map. Print it out with the directions. Use the Point of Interest layers to mark our restaurants, gas stations, historic, and scenic spots to be sure you have what you need along the way.
- Keep a compass in the car for navigation if you get lost. Have a paper map of the area in which you will travel. On Star or on board GIS is great if you have it but with good map skills you can get most places just fine.
- It is best to travel with others and to have told someone to expect your arrival by a certain time and then to call them when you get there. Otherwise, no one may know you had an accident or got lost.
- Have money with you and a second small stash in your car. There is nothing worse than having your wallet get lost or stolen and being far from home without money for gas or food.
- Distracted drivers are as impaired as drunk drivers and nearly as deadly. Stop to look at the map or read directions. Don't let you music, food, radio, or passengers distract you.
